How fast the prices are changing in Forex market?

While designing our software, we found that there can be more than 10 new price values (ticks) each second during wild moves around the news time. While in slow Asian trading there can be less than one tick a minute.  Most of the time, though, there are 1-2 ticks a second.

More to it, in a normal trading session, it might take the markets literally thousands of ticks just to tread water for minutes on end.

Why is this important? Because we see redundancy in the market data. If we can reduce it, we can correspondingly cut the time we need to spend practicing.

How? Let us explain with a simple example from everyday life.

Imagine you’ve recorded a TV show with your DVR. When you watch the recording, you can fast forward during the commercials. This saves your time.

Moreover, you can save even more time – if you fast forward some dull moments, as well.

Now, we believe you guessed already how all this is relevant for the Forex practice.

Exactly!

And the dull moments are when the markets go nowhere for minutes.

Once we realized it, we immediately implemented the Fast Forward feature in our Simulator. So, you can vary the speed the ticks appear.

How does it work?

For example, when in slow Asian trading we only have 10 ticks a minute, you can safely increase the tick speed. Even when practicing at 4X speed,  the effective tick rate won’t exceed 1 tick/s. Which is still fully manageable. And less boring.

But at 4X speed, you can squeeze one 8-hour session in just 2 hours. And quite often, even less!

Because at times, you can increase the speed even more. E.g. when you’ve placed an order, you can move forward even faster –  until the market approaches your SL or TP orders. And then reduce the speed again.

You get the idea.

Time saving alone is a great benefit – but there is much more our Simulator will give you.

First off, you can save time by fast forwarding also online! We implemented Time Shift feature, which enables you to put the live market data feed on hold.

Remember our TV-show example? For live simulation it is even more relevant. When you pause, the Simulator keeps recording the ticks, and when you resume, you can fast forward the same way as in the offline Simulator.

For whatever reasons, brokers might only send part of all the ticks to the demo. So, it is often much easier to “trade” and “win” on a demo.

Most of us connect our trading terminal to our brokers’ server via the Internet. So, depending on your connection quality, the price you see might be sometimes delayed by 500 ms or even more. And when you try to place your order, your command will also reach the server with the same delay, when the price can already change.

Whereas the “big guys” are always connected locally – with virtually zero delay. So, they will be always front-running you.

Like we said, during fast market moves there can be over 10 ticks each  second. So, your decision can be based on the market situation 10 ticks behind. Another 10 new ticks can appear before your trading command even reaches the server.
